This behind the scenes project captures the making of a music video for dkjbeats (Danny Johnson), a Pennsylvanian musician who focuses on low-fi beat-making with jazzy melodies. With a social media following spanning 740k across Instagram, Spotify, TikTok and YouTube, this body of work is intended to promote Johnson’s, currently, unreleased song and music video.

Using the Pentax 6×7 I wanted the medium format image to emphasize the scale and presence of Johnson’s work, as well as to leave room for commercial uses of his image. Majority of the shoot took place in and around Valley Forge during June, where elements such as bright skies and greenery were present. Porta 400 was used to capture a softer render of the greens and blues under bright light; this particular speed of film also aided in location changes such as Johnson’s dim studio.

Johnson’s concept for his music video was speaking to something, reflective and existential, which I wanted to capture through the BTS. Whether this manifested as the crew’s concerted efforts of concentration in idyllic landscapes or Johnson’s will to endure the proximity of measuring tapes and a heavy camera, the idea of taking it in and letting it be were there.
